Confronted with a huge in terms of area covered open air space which was not used by anyone at all for anything we wished to create an anti-paradigm which would display and underline the dysfunctionality and the unpracticality of this space.
We constructed and placed in the center of this forecourt of the University a sitting bench of normal proportions which was raised to a height of 3.5 m from the ground. The gesture of raising this public bench automatically entails the cancellation of its properties and highlights its uselessness. The unique presence of this architectural element in the center of this space underlines its emptiness especially in combination with the absence of any other elements which might indicate some social activity. The construction is oriented in such a way that it’s imaginary user would be facing the empty space between the two buildings but also virtually towards the center of the city.
(In the context of the ‘Border Crossings’ Conference which took place at Komotini and in collaboration with a group of students from the Department of History and Ethnology of the Democretian University of Thrace, we undertook artistic interventions on the external walls and the open space for recreation which belonged to the building that staged this Department.)

Βρισκόμενοι αντιμέτωποι με έναν τεράστιο σε έκταση ανενεργό προαύλιο χώρο Πανεπιστημίου, θελήσαμε λειτουργώντας αντιπαραδειγματικά να δημιουργήσουμε ένα έργο που να προβάλλει τη δυσλειτουργικότητα και την αντιπρακτικότητα του χώρου.
Κατασκευάσαμε και τοποθετήσαμε στο κέντρο του προαυλίου του Πανεπιστημίου, ένα παγκάκι φυσικών διαστάσεων, υπερυψωμένο στα 3,5 μέτρα.
Η κίνηση της ανύψωσης του δημοσίου καθίσματος, αποτελεί αυτομάτως την ακύρωσή των ιδιοτήτων του και την αχρήστευσή του. Η μοναδική παρουσία αυτού του αρχιτεκτονικού στοιχείου στο κέντρο του χώρου τονίζει την κενότητά του συνδυαστικά με την απουσία άλλων στοιχείων που να δηλώνουν κάποια κοινωνική δραστηριότητα. Η κατασκευή είναι προσανατολισμένη με τέτοιο τρόπο ώστε ο υποτιθέμενος χρήστης της να αντικρίζει το κενό ανάμεσα στα δύο κτίρια, αλλά και νοητά το κέντρο της πόλης.
(Στα πλαίσια του συνεδρίου Border Crossings στην Κομοτηνή και σε συνεργασία με μια ομάδα φοιτητών του τμήματος Ιστορίας και Εθνολογίας του Δημοκριτείου Πανεπιστημίου Θράκης, υλοποιήσαμε εικαστικές παρεμβάσεις στους εξωτερικούς τοίχους και στον υπαίθριο προαύλιο χώρο του κτιρίου του τμήματος αυτού.)
